A common orthodontic emergency is a broken or damaged braces bracket. Brackets often become damaged because they are fragile and can become damaged from several things, like:

– Eating foods that can be damaging to braces
– An injury to the mouth
– Brushing teeth too vigorously
– Using a toothpick
– Flossing too vigorously

In the case of an emergency with your braces, there are certain steps that Dr. Michael Sabat recommends that you follow.

Examine the Damage
The first thing you need to do is examine the extent of the damage. Leave the bracket in place if it is still attached to the wire.

Take Action
If the bracket is attached, but is sticking out, use a cotton swab to gently push it back into place. Orthodontic wax can be used to hold the bracket in its correct position until you can come to Sabat Orthodontics. If the wires are sticking out, press them back against the tooth and cover them with orthodontic wax to help prevent injury to your gums and to the inside of your mouth.

Schedule an Appointment
We urge you to schedule an appointment with our orthodontist in Parma and Brecksville, Ohio, as soon as you can to have your braces repaired. Let us know if you will be bringing the parts of the bracket with you.

Minimize Damage
In the time leading up to your appointment, we recommend that you regularly rinse out your mouth with salt water to promote healing. In addition, eat soft foods to avoid further damage to your braces.
