You’re on your way to a straighter, healthier smile. Your braces have been placed and your orthodontic treatment has begun. You may be aware that cleaning your teeth while wearing braces can be more difficult. Dr. Sabat and our team are happy to give you tips on proper dental hygiene with braces.

Brushing Teeth
Brush your teeth twice each day, for at least two minutes each time. Choose either a manual or electric toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head. Before you brush your teeth, be sure to remove any elastics. When cleaning your teeth, focus on scrubbing your braces. Open your mouth wide, place your toothbrush in your mouth against your cheek, and bite down with your upper and lower front teeth meeting together. Then scrub your braces back and forth, up and down, and in little circles going in either direction. Work from your back teeth to your front teeth to make sure you get everything. After that side is done, open your mouth wide again, put the toothbrush on the other side against the cheek, bite together with the front teeth, and brush the other side in the same way. When you finish scrubbing your braces, be sure to brush the chewing surfaces of each tooth as well as the backs of the teeth.

It is important that you floss your teeth at least once every day. Flossing while wearing braces can prove challenging at first. We recommend using a floss threader to aid you in properly cleaning between your teeth. Floss threaders can help you get the dental floss beneath or over the wires so that you can clean your teeth of plaque and food particles beneath the gumline.
