Although we see patients from the age of 7 to 70 for evaluations, the American Association of Orthodontists suggests age 7 for an initial evaluation. This is based on the assumption that four upper and four lower permanent front teeth, and four permanent first molars (six year molars) have erupted into the mouth. The learning curve in orthodontics is long. In my first five years in practice I thought I understood orthodontics. Several years and many patients later I realized I still had much more to learn. My experience taught me that looking at oral growth and development at the age of 7 creates the opportunity to start your child on the road to orthodontic care at the most appropriate time for them.
Appearance is certainly a motivating factor in seeking an orthodontic specialist’s evaluation, but there are many other dental issues like thumb sucking, overbite, open bite, cross bites, and tongue thrusting that can affect the growth of your child’s facial development.
As your orthodontic specialist, I will evaluate your child’s teeth, how the teeth fit in the face, and how the teeth fit in the smile. Establishing long-term goals and a personalized treatment plan will help us to provide your child with quality orthodontic treatment at the best value. My philosophy is to start with a conservative approach without the extraction of permanent teeth, using the most current techniques available. I believe in educating my patients as well as my staff. My years of experience and continued education allows me the opportunity to create treatment just for you and your family.
Remember, you do not have to be referred to my office by your family dentist. You have the right to choose the best care for you and your family from the most qualified orthodontic specialist.
