Dr. Michael Sabat, your orthodontist, recently recommended that you have braces in either our Parma or Brecksville, Ohio, location. We are so excited to begin watching your teeth become straighter and your new smile get started. Did you know that there are certain things that you can do to protect your braces to ensure that your treatment stays on schedule? Dr. Michael Sabat and our team are happy to give you tips to help you keep your braces in tip top shape.

Foods to Avoid
After your braces are placed, our orthodontist will give you a list of foods to stay away from while wearing braces. In general, you should avoid any food that is sticky, chewy, or hard. Sticky foods include caramels, certain candy, and gum. These are likely to get stuck in your braces. Crunchy food like popcorn or hard big pretzels can become lodged in the braces. All of the foods mentioned can harm, bend, or break a bracket or wire.

Habits to Avoid
Be careful about your oral habits while wearing braces. Non-food objects should not be placed in the mouth. Biting nails or pens can damage your braces very easily. Eating ice can also cause trouble with not only your wires, but your teeth.

When Accidents Happen
Even if you are careful with your braces, accidents can happen. For instance, an injury to the face during sports can cause a bracket or wire to become loose or broken. If this happens, call Sabat Orthodontics as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. You can use orthodontic wax to temporarily hold a loose bracket to the wire or to cover the end of a wire that may be sticking out in the back and poking.
